Background:

Doug MacAyeal conducts research on the break-up of ice shelves and the subsequent transport of icebergs into the surrounding ocean. He is the veteran of 10 seasons of fieldwork on the Ross Ice Shelf and in the Ross Sea. MacAyeal has particularly tracked the progress of Larsen B ice shelf, which broke up in 2002. He and his students now perform field work on the remaining Larsen B and Larsen C ice shelves to verify a hypothesis suggesting how ice shelves are linked to climate. An avid sailor, MacAyeal has competed many times in the Chicago-to-Mackinac race, the world’s longest freshwater sailboat race.
