Background:
Donald Levy is a physical chemist who uses the technique of supersonic jet cooling to study the structure of molecules. He was one of the first chemists to exploit the technique, which entails cooling a gas by rapidly expanding it into a vacuum, thereby "freezing" the motion of the molecules and making them much easier to study.
Levy is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and editor of the Journal of Chemical Physics. He also was among the faculty who helped plan the Gordon Center for Integrative Science. Dedicated in 2006, the Gordon Center is the largest capital project in the University's history.
Levy became Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories on Jan. 1, 2007.
