Background:
Kevin M. Murphy's research focuses on the empirical analysis of inequality, unemployment, and relative wages; the economics of growth and development; and the economic value of improvements in health and longevity. More than 60 of Murphy's research papers have been published in academic journals including the Journal of Law and Economics, the Journal of Political Economy, and American Economic Review.
Murphy is the co-editor, with Robert Topel, of Measuring the Gains from Medical Research: An Economic Approach (University of Chicago Press, 2003) and co-author, with Gary S. Becker, of Social Economics: Market Behavior in a Social Environment (Harvard University Press, 2000). He is a faculty research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Murphy has been named a MacArthur Fellow for 2005 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He is the first professor at a business school to be chosen as a MacArthur Fellow in the 25 years that the awards have been given.
In 1997, Murphy received the John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic Association. The award is given once every two years to the most outstanding American economist under the age of 40.
