Andrew Abbott's major research interests lie in the sociology of occupations, professions, and work, the sociology of culture and knowledge, and social theory. His current theoretical focus is the study of action, meaning, and emotion. Abbott also has longstanding interests in methods, heuristics, and the philosophy and practice of sociology. He is the editor of the American Journal of Sociology and the author of Chaos of Disciplines, Time Matters, and The System of Professions.
