Background:


As a research mathematician, Fefferman specializes in harmonic analysis, partial differential equations and probability theory. He began serving a five-year term as Dean of the Physical Sciences Division in 2003. In addition to his teaching, research and administrative work, Fefferman also has been active in mathematics education outreach, having worked with public school teachers for more than 15 years at all levels, from elementary school through high school. His outreach work includes teaching in the Summer Institute for the Development of Mathematics Teachers in Chicago Middle Schools, the Mathachievement program for Chicago Public School teachers in grades K-8, and the Collegiate Scholars Program, a partnership between Chicago Public Schools and the University.
