Background:

James Chandler's research and teaching interests are centered in the romantic movement in England and include 18th and 19th century poetry; the rise of historicism, the concept of the "period," the "case," and the historical novel; relations between politics and literature, history and criticism; romantic fiction; the Scottish Enlightenment; Scottish and Irish literatures and cultures; the long history of sentiment; and film. He also serves as Director of the Franke Institute for Humanities.

Chandler is currently writing The Sympathetic Eye: A Brief History of Sentiment, a project that aims to set the work of Frank Capra and of the "golden age" of Hollywood in much longer perspectives of cultural and intellectual history than one finds in the existing scholarship, and The New Cambridge History of English Romantic Literature, a 300,000-word edited volume in The New Cambridge History of Romanticism, now being revised for the first time since the first edition early in in the 20th-century. Both works are projected for publishing in 2008 via the Cambridge University Press.
